South Africthe Home was built in the Thirties on the places of a derelict hotel. A building was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and opened in 1933. A building wwhen acquired per government of South Africa, & arranged as its independent diplomatic presence in the UK. When you took World War II, Prime Minister Jan Smuts lived there to conduct South Africa's war plans.

Within 1961, South Africa became a republic, and its membership of the Commonwealth of Nations expired. Accordingly a building became a South African Embassy. In the period of a Eighties, the building was a focal point of Anti Apartheid protestors in the UK. When a merely South African diplomatic building within a public vicinity, the places was targeted by protestors from either as much as the world. In a period of the 1990 Poll Tax Riots, the building was placed alight by rioters, although non seriously damaged.
